TRIPOLI, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Libya's Government of National Unity (GNU) on Tuesday condemned a bombing that killed a senior general of the eastern-based Libyan National Army.

Fawzi al-Mansouri, head of the military intelligence department of the Libyan General Command, leadership and headquarters of the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA), was killed in an attack outside his home in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, local media reported Monday.

The attack was carried out using explosives, and an extensive investigation has been launched into the incident, said local media Almarsad.

In a statement, the GNU said the bombing constituted a "terrorist act," stressing that condemning terrorism and violence is a "firm national and principled position."

The GNU called on relevant authorities to launch an urgent and comprehensive investigation into the incident, identify those responsible, and take the necessary legal measures against them.

The General Command of the LNA said in a statement mourning al-Mansouri that the major general was killed following evening prayers in Benghazi, when an explosive device attached to his car detonated.

Al-Mansouri was an important military commander of forces based in eastern Libya. He served as head of the military intelligence department and took part in military operations against jihadist groups.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the bombing.
