PHNOM PENH, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia has been officially elected as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the term 2026-2030, said a Cambodian foreign ministry's press release issued late on Friday.
The elections were held during the 11th session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage from June 17-18, the press release said.
The committee plays a central role in advancing the objectives of the 2003 Convention by providing guidance on best practices, recommending measures for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, examining nominations for inscription on UNESCO's lists, and supporting international cooperation and assistance for heritage preservation.
"Cambodia's appointment to this distinguished body reflects the international community's profound confidence and trust, as well as recognition of Cambodia's rich cultural legacy and its longstanding commitment to preserving and promoting humanity's living heritage," the press release said.
"From the grandeur of Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear Temple to living traditions such as Chapei Dang Veng (a long-necked, two-stringed lute) and the krama (a traditional woven textile), Cambodia's cultural heritage embodies centuries of history, creativity, spirituality, and community identity," it added. ■
